Corvallis Chapter
Named for the City of Corvallis, the Corvallis Chapter covers Benton, Lincoln, and Linn counties, extending from the Oregon Coast across the Willamette Valley to the crest of the Cascades. This is a region highlighted by both rocky and sandy ocean shores, old growth coastal forests, Willamette Valley prairie and woodlands, Old Cascade forests and balds, and high Cascade peaks. Notable botanical destinations for our field trips include the grassy bald summit and noble fir (Abies procera) forests of Marys Peak, the wetland and upland prairies of William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge and Jackson-Frazier Wetland, and the incredibly diverse montane meadows of Iron Mountain. A rare denizen of some of the wetland prairie habitats, peacock larkspur (Delphinium pavonaceum) is the logo species for the Chapter.
Founded in 1982, the Corvallis Chapter has been and still is closely tied with many Oregon State University professors, staff, students, and alumni. Former OSU Herbarium curator, professor, and NPSO Fellow, Dr. Kenton Chambers, championed many NPSO and Corvallis Chapter causes across the state and locally during his time and inspired many more to join the Chapter and do the same.
The Corvallis Chapter established and maintains a native plant garden at the Nature Center in Avery Park in Corvallis, staffs an educational table at the Master Gardener event “Insights into Gardening” each year, participates in the Corvallis May Spring Garden Festival, and staffs a booth at the Benton County Fair each year. The Chapter offers grants to support projects aligned with NPSO’s mission and leads spring, summer, and fall field trips to view native plants and their communities in the Corvallis Chapter region.
The Corvallis Chapter holds regular monthly meetings fall through spring at Cordley Hall at Oregon State University. Monthly meetings feature guest lecturers on topics of interest to our members.
