William Cusick Chapter

Named for the pioneer botanist William C. Cusick, who settled in the Powder River Valley in 1872, this chapter serves members living in the far northeastern corner of Oregon, with most members being from La Grande or Baker City.  This area offers up a complex geologic history combined with a wide range of topography and habitats yielding a marvelous diversity of botanical treasures to be found. Field trip destinations range from the bottom of Hells Canyon on the Snake River to the tops of alpine peaks of the Eagle Cap Wilderness in the Wallowa Mountains, through the Blue, Elkhorn, and Greenhorn Mountains, as well as Zumwalt Prairie.

Founded in 1985, the William Cusick Chapter offers local field trips, advice on gardening with native plants, and occasionally programs and/or speakers. Since 1990, they have been maintaining a native prairie with milkweed (Asclepias sp.) in Gangloff Park in LaGrande.
