Willamette Valley Chapter

Based in Salem, the Willamette Chapter is one of the eleven (11) chapters of the Native Plant Society of Oregon. We’re dedicated to the enjoyment, conservation, and study of Oregon’s native plants and habitats.

The Willamette Valley Chapter activities generally serve those members from Salem, Marion County, and parts of Polk County.  However, field trips are wide ranging with the central proximity of the chapter having convenient access to areas ranging from the High Cascades to the Pacific Coast.  More locally, the Willamette Valley chapter has some incredible botanical destinations including Kingston Prairie, Silver Falls State Park, Minto-Brown Island Park, and Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge. Some of the best examples of rare wetland and upland prairie habitats that once typified the Willamette Valley can be found at some of these destinations.

Founded in 1977 as one of three NPSO founding chapters, the Willamette Valley Chapter offers field trips, family education programs, classes and presentations. It also sponsors local projects to collect seeds, plant wildflowers, and remove invasive weeds.  In addition, the chapter administers two scholarship funds for 3rd and 4th year students enrolled in plant systematics or plant ecology at an Oregon college or university – the Jean Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Augusta Rockafellar Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The Willamette Valley Chapter generally has monthly presentations and members get together year-round for hikes, various weed pulls, and native planting projects.
